Over the past month and a half, I’ve been working feverishly on redesigning and rebuilding the Mochi website from scratch — including a complete rewrite of the documentation. I’m very happy to finally announce that the new site is live!

Global search in Mochi has always been a little rough around the edges. It worked, but it never felt quite right — sometimes slow, sometimes inconsistent. I’ve spent the past few months reworking it from the ground up, and I wanted to share a bit about how it’s evolved.

v1.15.0 Migrating local data to SQLite

The only significant change in this version update is the migration of local data from IndexedDB to SQLite. This migration is intended to provide more stable and reliable storage of local data, in addition to giving users a more open format for inspecting and querying their data locally.

When I created Mochi over 2 years ago, I wanted a simple and minimal way to create flashcards from markdown notes. I think Mochi accomplishes that goal pretty well, but there are times when writing markdown for each card can get pretty tedious. Most notably with language cards, I found myself repeating the same format for most of my cards. This is where templates come in. It allows you to define the structure of your cards once in markdown, then just fill in the variable data with custom fields on the card.

Using spaced repetition to learn a language

Reaching any level of proficiency in a foreign language is a long and difficult road. The traditional approach of enrolling in a class, or taking an online course can offer some much needed guidance, and they definitely make you feel like you're being productive and learning, but unfortunately they're not very helpful in acquiring the language. Many students will find themselves completely lost in real-life conversations, even after spending countless hours in class or on Duolingo.

Today I'm excited to announce an oft requested feature for Mochi: importing decks from Anki. This is great news for Mochi users because it means you can now take advantage of the huge library of Anki decks available online.
