Create Your First Card

Once you're in, it's time to create your first card.

Creating a card

  1. Click New deck to create a new deck and give it a name.
  2. Click New Card.
  3. Copy and past the following text into the card:

    What is Mochi?

  4. Click Save.

This card just contains some text and only has one side. We could call this a note card. By default, every new card in Mochi is a blank markdown canvas where you can put in whatever content you'd like.

Let's edit the card we just created and turn it into a flashcard by adding a back side.

  1. Open the card you just created if it's not already open.
  2. Click the () dropdown and select Edit (or press E on the keyboard).
  3. Copy and paste the following text at the bottom of the card:

    ---
An app that helps you remember things.

  4. Click Save.

We now have a flashcard with two sides. The front of the card says "What is Mochi?" and the back of the card says "An app that helps you remember things."

Formatting text

As mentioned earlier, Mochi cards can be formatted using Markdown. Markdown lets you add structure—like bold text, italics, lists, and headings—using just plain text markup.

Let's edit the card from the previous section and try out a few formatting options.

Add markdown formatting

  1. Open the card and click Edit.

  2. Change the front of the card to:

    # What is Mochi?

  3. On the back, change the text to:

An app that helps you **remember** things.

  4. Click Save.

The hash symbol (#) turns the first line of text on the front of the card into a heading. This makes the text appear larger.

The double asterisks (**) on the back of the card makes the surrounding text bold. You can also select some text to see a list of formatting options.

Adding a template

Adding a divider to your card to turn it into a flashcard is neat, but it can be tedious to type that out every time you want to create a flashcard. In the next section we'll learn how to use Templates to speed up card creation.
