Mochi supports two powerful card types for testing recall inside context: cloze deletions and diagram cards. These formats are especially useful when you want to remember exact details, vocabulary in context, or labeled components of an image.
Cloze deletions (hidden text)
Cloze deletions hide part of the text while reviewing the card. They are ideal for:
Filling in a missing word in a sentence
Memorizing key terms within context
Learning facts, formulas, or translations
Simple cloze deletions
Wrap the hidden text in double curly braces:
The hormone {{insulin}} is produced by the {{pancreas}}.
During review, the hidden words are masked until revealed.
Cloze deletion groups
Cloze deletions can be split into groups so each group becomes its own review variant — each with its own schedule and history.
{{1::insulin}} is produced by the {{2::pancreas}}.
This produces two review prompts:
Version
What is hidden?
What it trains
Group 1
insulin
What does the pancreas produce?
Group 2
pancreas
Which organ produces insulin?
Useful for multi-fact sentences and language learning.
Typing cloze answers
You can require yourself to type in the hidden text to test precise recall.
To enable typed cloze answers:
Click Settings in the left-hand side navigation.
Select Preferences from the dropdown.
Click on the Cards section from the left-hand sidebar.
Toggle Type hidden text on.
This adds an input box during review and checks correctness automatically.
Diagram cards (image occlusion)
Diagram cards work like cloze deletions but for parts of an image. Instead of hidden text, each masked area becomes a recall prompt.
Examples:
Anatomy diagrams (bones, muscles, vessels)
Maps (countries, capitals, regions)
Electrical schematics or circuits
How to create a diagram card
Click on the New Card dropdown menu.
Select New diagram card.
Click Choose image.
Add rectangle masks to hide parts of the image.
(Optional) Add a caption.
Click Save.
During review, Mochi shows each masked region one at a time:
Merging masks
You can also merge multiple mask boxes into a single "review unit".
To merge masks:
Edit the card
Choose the Selection tool from the toolbar.
Select the masks you want to merge.
Click on the Merge tool from the toolbar.
The merged masks will now be displayed as a single review.
