Reviewing cards in reverse

Some flashcards can be learned in two directions. For example:

  • Word → Definition
  • Country → Capital
  • Condition → Symptoms

Reviewing both ways strengthens different types of memory:

Direction Cognitive skill trained
Front → Back Recognition (easier)
Back → Front Recall / active retrieval (harder, more durable)

How reverse reviews work

When reverse reviews are enabled:

  • A reverse version of the card is created automatically
  • Each direction has its own review history
  • Each direction has its own spaced-repetition schedule

This means one direction might be well-learned while the other still needs frequent review — which often reflects real-world learning.

Example

You might easily recognize a Chinese character but struggle to write it from memory.

When reverse reviews can be useful

Reverse reviews are especially helpful when:

  • Learning vocabulary
  • Studying flashcards with pairs of related facts
  • Practicing translations or symbol ↔ meaning relationships
  • You want higher-quality recall, not just recognition
